Visual thinking

Design starts with how you see, think and draw.

A sketch is a way to test an idea. It can explain how an object works, how a person uses a space or what should change. Start with clarity, not polish.

01

Use the official 2027–28 information

The official NID admissions portal currently publishes 2027–28 handbooks, programme information and amendments. It discusses DAT Prelims and DAT Mains and warns that the nature or structure of assessments may change. Read the handbook for the actual programme and campus you intend to apply to; do not transfer an older test pattern to every current programme.

02

Look for relationships

Draw a chair beside a table and compare heights, overlaps and the space between them. Mark a horizon before drawing edges. A believable relationship communicates more than a meticulously shaded object floating without context.

03

Turn observation into imagination

List three difficulties someone has using an ordinary object. Sketch two alternative forms, then draw the most useful idea in context. Show the hand, direction of movement and scale. A useful design sketch makes a decision visible.

04

Tell a story visually

Make four small frames about carrying a fragile object through a crowded space. Keep characters recognisable and show cause and effect. Review what a reader can infer from body position, object placement and changes between frames.

05

Independent foundations, no affiliation

NIDAL can help you practise drawing foundations and receive guidance on your sketches. It does not provide a verified NID-specific coaching programme, predict exam questions or guarantee admission. NID explicitly says it has not authorised coaching providers. Consult official resources for eligibility, assessment and applications.

Put it on paper

A small exercise. A useful start.

Choose a crowded bus stop or kitchen corner. Draw a small scene, identify a usability problem and sketch two changes that could help. Explain the trade-off in each.

Questions about visual thinking

Is NIDAL affiliated with NID?

No. NIDAL is an independent drawing-learning platform. NID has not endorsed this programme.

Is a polished illustration enough for design preparation?

Visual communication also involves observation, idea development and explaining decisions. Practise those alongside drawing technique.
